The man who brought back "Les Miserables" in Paris

British producer Cameron Mackintosh musicals reigned over forty years.

Sir Cameron Mackintosh is rare in France. It even comes to sell his farmhouse in the Luberon. "The area has become too snobbish," laughs the flamboyant impresario who lives between London and his mansion in a remote corner of Scotland. But Friday night he will be at the Chatelet, for the return of Les Miserables in Paris, thirty years after its creation by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil. For the Paris premiere, Sir Cameron Mackintosh invited Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Frederic Mitterrand, Robert Hossein, Michel Drucker, Philippe Labro, but also Jean-Louis Borloo and Beatrice Schoenberg, whose son, Thomas, 30, is the right arm Mackintosh.

At 63 (he looks ten years younger), with Sir Cameron Mackintosh is Andrew Lloyd Webber, the largest producer in the world of musicals. "I've never seen someone so passionate about the theater," said Jean-Luc Choplin, director of the Chatelet. He knows everything, watches everything. It is a producer as it exists anymore. "In 1964, Mackintosh began as a handyman in theaters. Forty years later, his fortune is estimated at 7.5 billion euros. Between London and New York, it employs one hundred employees. "But with more than thirty shows in the world including Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Oliver! and Avenue Q, I work for tens of thousands of people, "he calculates. If he claims not to remember his turnover, he concedes that "2009 was a record year, because with the crisis, people want to see new things."

In addition to its production and management of seven of the most beautiful theaters in London that he renovated at great expense, he has a third lucrative: "I own 50% of Music Theater International, the largest catalog of human musicals like West Side Story, Guys & Dolls and Annie. "

Its success, Sir Cameron owes its flair. "Les Miserables, he made the second biggest hit of all time behind Phantom of the Opera just listening to a tape," says author Patrick Niedo Memories musicals (to be published by Editions du bookmarks). In 1980, Mackintosh was the first instance take on music and movies by exporting its shows. "With Cats, Miss Saigon and Les Miserables, Broadway he saved from bankruptcy. It was a cut-throat. Without inspiration, 42nd Street and A Chorus Line were the only shows in theaters, "says Patrick Niedo.

In the 2000s, Mackintosh put even more on the classics. Besides Mary Poppins, it creates new versions of Miss Saigon, Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera. Special effects, sophisticated lighting, great voice ... The 2010 version of Les Miserables is of such quality that the show is called in the world. His plans? The big screen adaptation of My Fair Lady and Les Miserables. Single, no children, he entrusted his fortune to a foundation. It will manage its theaters, "her seven children" with no obligation to give that musicals forever.

Musical "Les Miserables" in France

After 25 years of triumph in London, one of the most famous musicals of the world invests Theatre du Chatelet with a wonderful spectacle that is effective and remains faithful to Hugo's legacy.
Origin and Presentation:

The musical by Alain Boublil (book) and Claude-Michel Schonberg (music), based on the novel by Victor Hugo, is on tour in France at the Chatelet Theatre from May 28 to July 4, 2010. Cameron Mackintosh presents a spectacular new production.

Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil are true pioneers, they came forward in 1973 with "The French Revolution", the first French musical and then getting down to the works of Victor Hugo. Primarily created by Robert Hossein (1980) whose show arouses the interest of British producer Cameron Mackintosh, who then makes the decision to resume in a more American style.

The musical is now staged by Trevor Nunn (Cats, Starlight Express) and John Caird. Presented in English in London in October 1985 and on Broadway in March 1987 she won a great success with impressive technical innovations including giving a lot of realism to the scenes. The Broadway show commonly renamed "Les Miz" was almost 18 at the poster! Les Misérables Cameron Mackintosh is presented in Paris at the Theatre Mogador in 1991.

On the 25th anniversary of Sir Cameron Mackintosh production of "Les Miserables" have therefore started a new tour and a new look with a new layout and decor directly inspired sketch of Victor Hugo.

History:

The booklet has remained faithful to the works of Victor Hugo, Jean Valjean, unjustly sentenced to prison for stealing bread to feed the dying child of her sister out after 19 years of confinement, including extension of penalty due to escape attempts. After some adventures he draws a line under its past by changing his identity and we find significant the city, mayor and boss of a factory. Factory where work Fantine, a single mother living a hard life and who finds himself kicked out after a fight. She is soon in the slums of the city among prostitutes, Jean Valjean discovers the guilty and face what she has become after being fired from her factory, dying Fantine to promise he will take care daughter. He will do everything to make happy little girl but it will shortly be pursued by Inspector Javert, who has vowed to get him.
Staging, songs and games players:

From the first minutes the viewer is seized and taken away, he faces a galley scene where Valjean found himself, the ship casts sheaves of water on stage, the effort of the convicts is visible and audible, you'd almost feel their sweat. The entire musical is built on a breathless pace, the scenes and plateaus succeed without a real break, the sets are modulated with flexibility and slide on the stage. Sets and trompe l'oeil effects, playing with perspective images which fit cleverly filmed actors take us far from the Theatre du Chatelet with incredible realism. It is astonishing to see how a musical could borrow with more finesse techniques normally used in film.

The key scenes such as the deaths of Fantine and Eponine we pull the tears and leave us a ball in the stomach, the show fills the room of Thenardier of laughter, the scene of the barricades where even the smell of powder is present we engages in a moment of history alive ...

All the singers on stage are great vocalists and comedy, far from tiring or make us lose the thread when not speaking, their game easily translated their words and emotions, they know how to play skillfully their voices and their bodies in the performance space. The actor playing Jean Valjean: John Owen-Jones has an impressive stature and carrisme that fits perfectly in character, Earl Carpenter in the role of Javert has demonstrated the complexity of the character and Thenardier (Lynne Wilmot and Ashley Artus) are really treated like a couple of clowns and comic opera brings a little levity into human cruelty they represent.

The performance of songs and chants-cons are stressed, they are strongly involved in the dramatic power of certain scenes including the duo Cosette / Marius in parallel with the monologue of despair Eponine.
Success hailed by the press agreed:

The press seems unanimous on the quality of the show presented, it praises the quality of play actors: A remarkable fluidity - Artists, passionate and exciting energy is contagious exclaims the Journal du Dimanche, a cast four-star ... pure "entertaiment". The dream continues according to Les Echos, an intense interpretation which is approved by Telerama. The quality and professionalism of the staging and sets are repeatedly emphasized: A wonderful show ... perfect for the stage of the Chatelet by Figaro magazine, The "Les Miserables" have conquered Paris - Voices powerful, spectacular staging, music beautiful - - The Blessed "Misérables rents Le Parisien, a British production sparkling ... Chills are guaranteed - Metro, Hugo is back - The modern scenography and rhythmic leaves the audience speechless for three hours - or The Morning Live" Les Miserables " remake themselves justice in Paris in 20 minutes.

Kudos to this comedy, a feast for the eyes and ears, a goldsmith work has been done both on the sets, lighting effects in the games, singing actors and stage design. The songs still trot in the minds of viewers even several days after the performance.

Sir Cameron Mackintosh speaks of Les Miserables

Victor Hugo is the author of one of history's most powerful and exciting ever published, a classic of universal significance.

Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Kretzmer Hubert captured the essence of this work by adapting it without prejudice, making it more popular than ever.

After the first at the Barbican Theatre on 8 October 1985, the musical moved to the Palace Theatre: how could I imagine that it remains nearly 18 years? Given later at the Queen's Theatre, the show matures, becoming more intimate and more powerful.
To mark the bicentenary of Victor Hugo in 2002 to support the success of Les Miserables, a school edition has been created: The Mis Schools Edition. For 8 years, nearly 122,000 young people have played this show in over 2,400 productions worldwide.

Les Miserables currently holds the record for the musical played the longest without interruption throughout the world. Until then, this record was held by another of my productions, Cats. With this longevity, Les Miserables has embarked on Broadway March 12, 1987.

Even today, the popular success of a woman like Susan Boyle and his interpretation of "I Dreamed a Dream" (Broadcast "Britain's Got Talent" aired in 2009) fascinates me: nearly 130 million hits on the website YouTube makes this song one of the most popular on the planet. A success that brought renewed public interest in the show, 25 years after its creation. Cosette, Fantine, Valjean and Javert never stop surprising me.

For this new production, we hired new performers, which - I have no doubt - will appeal to the public. I would like to thank him and the creative team that makes this production a birthday magic show as always.
I know when I step through the other side of the barricade, the role I played in this wonderful musical amount will remain one of my proudest moments.
